Sefiya Ibrahim is no ordinary girl; she’s a diva! And unlike the typical diva, she is a sweet young woman who is quite friendly and fun. The undoubtedly pretty singer walked into the interview venue looking all very beautiful and in the company of her fluffy and jolly white puppy whom she calls daddy. So we sat down and talked who is Sefiya? According to her, she is “just a girl” who happens to be a brand. Believe me, that’s exactly what she is- a brand. For not only is this girl a talented singer and performer, she is also a model, an actress and a business woman.
As an artistic young woman, “everything and everyone around me” inspires her on a daily. Her environment determines the sound of her music. The interesting thing however is that Sefiya never set out to be a singer even though music fascinated her right earlier on in her life. So she knew music is something she would try her hands on. And encountering the likes of Rihanna whom she refers to as the “princess of pop music” influenced Sefiya’s decision to sing out loud. And by the time her first single Love Me Jeje was released, she knew without doubt that she was on her path to musical greatness. Right now, she feels “sincerely fulfilled to be musically-inclined.”
When I asked her what she loves most about her profession as an entertainer, the ever smiley Sefiya replied aptly that “for a start, it brings in money and loads of attention.” But more than that, being rich and famous has its advantages and disadvantages, an example of said advantages which is being able to travel around the world. However, on the flip-side, everybody is “up in your business.” Apparently, this disadvantage her fame has brought her seems to be common among all celebrities home and abroad. For instance, certain soft sale reporters constantly cook up unreal stories about Sefiya which often form opinions and perceptions such as those that portray her as mean. But she is not hurt by these rumours as Sefiya is too hearty to bemoan nonsense. However, she put the records straight by pointing out that she is not mean and will never be. According to her, some people may confuse her toughness in business with her actual personality. But even though she is very formal while negotiating deals (as she feels “it’s the best way to transact and maintain mutual respect”), she still is very down-to-earth, fun-loving and a Nigerian sweetheart.
Now the question most people would like an answer to is- who is Sefiya? This question sprang from people’s curiosity about the singer following the emergence of her unique sound. So we threw this question to the amazing girl and as always she smiled and replied that she’s “just a girl…” And don’t let her name deceive you so much because a little research revealed to me that many people actually think she is a Muslim from northern Nigeria. Interestingly though Sefiya is from Abia State, and as a typical Igbo girl she loves money. Yes she does. Lol. As a matter of fact, the availability of money (asides having God in her life) brings her the uttermost satisfaction. And that is why she would probably have involved herself in any legitimate business that turns over huge sums of money is she weren’t a musician. And to let you know how real this diva is, when I asked her if she’d rather be rich or famous, she aptly replied “I’d rather be rich ’cause if I’m rich, I would also be famous.” True that…
The interview with this diva was quite a moment; trust me. And as expected, we talked about diverse issues relating to her, including her relationship status. A delectably pretty, rich and famous young lady like her should have men hovering around her like bees attracted to a delicious nectar, right? But is she dating anyone? Well her immediate answer was NO! Not at all. She however gave no reason for this, but gave insight into who she considers an ideal man. in her exact words, “my ideal man should be smart, have a sense of humour, be business-oriented, understand me in totality and of course fear God. Hmmm…talk about a girl who knows what she wants and exactly how she wants it. Also note that Sefiya isn’t ready to perform the traditional roles of women to any man because she believes that in the twenty first century no woman should be subservient to any man in the name of loyalty. But wait a sec…is she a feminist? Let’s wait till she comes out with a feminist theory before we jump to conclusions.
Meanwhile, away from relationship status we talked fashion. Apparently not only has she got the voice and stage charisma, she also knows her way around the boutiques and always dresses to endear. And without mincing words, she clearly stated that her fashion icon is Rihanna. Well she does look very well fashioned, and is deserving to be recognized as a fashion icon in the Nigerian entertainment scene.
Finally, it is important to note that this girl has no time to compete with anyone asides herself. Yes, her only competition is herself. With her philosophy of life as “with God all things are possible”, this girl is set to conquer everywhere. And now hear her talk to you about her plans/current ambitions:
“I’m currently promoting my new video nwayo nwayo video remix ft Iyanya in preparation for my debut album. I’m also working on some collaboration with some A-list artist in the industry so its cool to say ‘expect something heated from me soon”
