WHY DO MODELS FALL ON THE RUNWAY?

Posted on Updated on

While walking the runway during a show organized by Givenchy as part of New York Fashion Week 2015, Victoria Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel fell dramatically to the floor and injured her pretty knees in the process. It was quite a scene for both the wrong and right reasons; wrong because it was funny to see a grown woman fall straight to the floor with reckless abandon, and then right because it simply illustrated the unavoidable hazards associated with each profession. Now thinking about the incident as I watch a short clip of the incident over and over, I can’t help but ask myself why models actually do fall while cat-walking down a runway.

According to Todd Leopold of CNN, Candice showed courage after the fall by simply shrugging it off and thanking those who assisted her to get up. Photo credit: CNN

So I have come up with a few reasons why our beautiful angels with the catlegs often go “kissing the floor” during fashion shows. Firstly, we all are familiar with a little something called stage fright, right? I suppose so! And the truth is that models sometimes get that overwhelming feeling when all the eyes are fixated on them, often causing them to loose focus thence falling. The unfortunate thing about the falls is that not only does it have the potential to ruin models careers, it can also be physically harmful as exemplified in the case of Candice.

The injuries probably aren't much, but they could have been worse.

Moving on, the second reason why a model may trip and fall while walking a runway is include unprofessional-ism. Now I know a lot of people may disagree with me on this; after all  so called “supermodels” do fall too. But let me explain what I mean by “unprofessional”- modeling is beyond merely trotting up and down a runway! This is because sometimes models wear very long dresses which may hinder their freedom to walk. In such instances, any model who doesn’t know how to kick the dress while still walking nicely will likely end up on the floor. In other words, when walking the runway wearing a very long dress, the possibility of the dress getting stuck in the model’s shoe is high. Consequently, if the model doesn’t know how to kick off the dress or better still prevent it from hampering her catwalk, then the floor might possibly become her portion…

Lastly, I believe that the high-heels models wear often do contribute to the falls we see on the runway. Sometimes it can be the main reason especially when the model walking in it has yet to master the art of doing so. But other times, the shoes can combine with any one of the factors previously mentioned; for instance a tensed model may miss her steps and fall. Worst still, a model’s long dress may get caught up in her shoe, causing her to fall.

No matter the cause of the falling however, the truth is that it is funny to see beautiful, confident-looking women falling to the floor. Some videos of these falls are all over the internet, and believe me they are hilarious. I have a few pictures which I shall now share. But while you laugh your head off, don’t forget that this is as much a work-related accident as industrial accident can be. In other words, take it easy on our angels with the catlegs...

I mean, what do we call these positions?

Even this lovely one was just about to have a date with the floor.
